What We Check in a Diesel Pre Purchase Inspection

Our truck pre-purchase inspections are hands-on and comprehensive. We assess the overall mechanical condition of the vehicle or machine, with particular focus on the areas that matter most for diesel equipment:

  • Engine & Drivetrain: We inspect the engine for signs of overheating, oil leaks, excessive smoke, worn belts and hoses, fluid condition, and any signs of previous major repairs. For diesel engines, this includes checking the turbo, injectors, and fuel system.

  • Transmission & Driveline: We assess gearbox operation, clutch condition, and driveline components for excessive wear or damage.

  • Cooling System: We inspect the radiator, coolant hoses, thermostat and cooling fans for condition and leaks.

  • Chassis & Frame: We look for cracks, corrosion, previous accident damage and structural issues that could affect the vehicle's safety or longevity.

  • Suspension & Steering: We check springs, shock absorbers, tie rods and other steering components for wear.

  • Brakes: We inspect brake components for wear and condition, including air brake systems on heavy vehicles.

  • Tyres & Wheels: We assess tread depth, wear patterns, sidewall condition and rim integrity.

  • Electrics & Accessories: We check lighting, gauges and electrical systems for faults.

Hydraulics (where applicable): For machinery and trucks with hydraulic systems, we inspect for leaks, hose condition and cylinder integrity.

4 Reasons to Get a Diesel Pre Purchase Inspection Before You Buy

Identify Faults

Used trucks and diesel machinery can look great on the outside while hiding serious mechanical problems underneath. Finding faults can help you avoid the lemons and save thousands of dollars on the wrong purchase!

Plan for Future Repairs

All vehicles and machinery need repairs from time to time. We’ll provide a report on the current state of your potential purchase. That allows you to plan for any future repairs or incorporate equipment into your fleet.

Negotiate the Price

There’s always room to negotiate a better deal. If our inspection uncovers faults or upcoming repairs, you have real leverage to negotiate the sale price down or ask the seller to fix issues before settlement.

Peace of Mind

We reduce the risk when you’re investing in a truck or other piece of diesel equipment. Our diesel pre-purchase inspections can tell you how the vehicle is running, identify faults and help you make the best decision possible.

We Work With Private Buyers and Fleet Operators

KS Mobile Diesel Service works with both private individuals and businesses across South East Queensland. Combined with our fleet vehicle maintenance, pre-purchase inspections can set your business up for success.

If you're purchasing a truck from interstate and can't inspect it yourself, we can travel to the seller's location to carry out the inspection on your behalf and report back with our findings.

Testimonials

"

Very honest and punctual service, Kel dropped into work one day and checked my slowly leaking diesel fuel pump, instead of trying to sell me a reco pump and full overhaul, he advised that it was only minor and obviously it would be best to fix it but it isn't urgent. That's how you know you have got a good mechanic...

Spend Your Money in the Right Places

Don’t pay too much for your vehicle or machinery purchase! Our pre-purchase inspections can save you tens of thousands of dollars on a potentially unreliable purchase. We’re on your side, making sure you’re not paying too much for what you’re getting.

Our team of diesel mobile mechanics can also help you negotiate the purchase price based on our findings. If a vehicle or machine comes with faults or a long list of required repairs, you can use that information to lower the sale price.

Doing this also allows us to make a complete list of all the work your vehicle or machinery requires. That way, if you decide to go ahead with the purchase, we can quote you in advance for any work that’s needed. We can tell you exactly how much it will cost to make the vehicle roadworthy, so you can adjust your offer accordingly.

Servicing all of South East Queensland

Our team works across South East Queensland (SEQ). No matter where you are in SEQ, we can travel to you to carry out your diesel pre-purchase inspection or truck breakdown service.

Our mobile diesel mechanics operate across the full South East Queensland region, including:

  • Caboolture and the Moreton Bay region
  • Brisbane and surrounds
  • Sunshine Coast
  • Noosa to Beerwah

If you’re purchasing from interstate and are unable to inspect a vehicle in person, we can travel to inspect it on your behalf. That way, you know what you’re getting when you pick up your equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a truck pre purchase inspection involve?

A truck pre purchase inspection is a thorough visual and mechanical assessment of the vehicle or machine you're considering buying. Our diesel mechanic inspects the engine, drivetrain, transmission, chassis, brakes, tyres, cooling system, electrics and hydraulics (where applicable). At the end of the inspection, you receive a clear report on the condition of the equipment and any faults or issues we found.

How long will a Pre-Purchase Inspection take?

We allow for up to 3 hours of onsite labour to complete a thorough visual inspection. The actual inspection time varies depending on the type, size, make, model and location of your intended purchase.

Please note that diesel pre-purchase inspections are undertaken on a visual basis only, and we may only be road tested if the vehicle is registered and insured.

Do I need to be present during the inspection?

No. We can carry out the inspection on your behalf. This is particularly useful if you're buying from interstate or if the vehicle is located a distance from you.

How much do Pre-Purchase Inspections cost?

The cost of a pre-purchase inspection varies depending on the type of equipment you would like us to inspect and how comprehensive you would like the inspection to be. Contact us for a quote on your pre-purchase diesel inspection.

What's the difference between a pre purchase inspection and a roadworthy?

A roadworthy (safety certificate) confirms that a vehicle meets the minimum safety requirements to be used on Queensland roads. It does not assess the overall mechanical condition, performance or remaining service life of the vehicle. A pre-purchase inspection goes much further. It's an independent mechanical assessment that tells you the true condition of the vehicle before you buy. In Queensland, a roadworthy is legally required when transferring vehicle registration, but a pre-purchase inspection is what protects your investment.

Does anything "fail" a pre purchase inspection?

No. Unlike a roadworthy, there are no pass or fail results with a pre purchase inspection. We simply assess the current condition of the equipment and report on what we find: faults, wear, potential problems and any repairs that will be needed. You then use that information to make the right call on whether to buy, negotiate, or walk away.

Is it legally required to have a Pre-Purchase Inspection for a truck?

There’s no legal requirement to conduct a pre-purchase inspection on a truck. However, trucks are large investments, and a pre-purchase inspection can prevent you from buying a lemon.

Note that a truck pre-purchase inspection is different from a roadworthy. You’ll still need a roadworthy certificate to transfer the truck’s registration into your name.

Can you inspect machinery as well as trucks?

Yes. We inspect all types of diesel-powered equipment, including trucks, heavy vehicles, earthmoving machinery, farm equipment and more.’
